QuickerSim CFD Toolbox for MATLAB – basics and applications

The seminar is intended to present the QuickerSim CFD Toolbox for MATLAB, a plug-in for numerically solving fluid flow and heat transfer problems. We begin with the motivation for creating such a toolbox. We focus on several MATLAB strengths as well as draw comparisons to other CFD software. In the main part we discuss solver’s models for flows and heat transfer with particular attention paid to current users applications. This includes both the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation for the incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations as well the Least-Square Finite Element Method (LS-FEM) for the compressible Euler Equations. We stress the software’s didactic potential. We focus on both the fundamental aspects of teaching CFD numerics as well more physics-oriented cases relevant for casual CFD users. Examples of coupling the Toolbox with other MATLAB tools (Optimization Toolbox, PDE Toolbox) are shown as well. The seminar concludes with a live demonstration of simulations of the coupled heat-fluid flow problem, flow in a deforming geometry and a compressible flow with a shock wave region where adaptive mesh refinement is employed.
